Layout decides whether it looks professional
The most common amateur mistake is starting at one end and working across, which leaves a sliver of tile at the far end where everyone can see it.
A pro dry-lays the run first and finds the layout that puts equal, reasonably sized cuts at both ends. Where a window or the range hood is the visual focal point, the layout centers on that instead of on the wall. Vertical layout matters too โ the tile course should relate sensibly to the underside of the upper cabinets, not end in an awkward strip.
This planning takes an hour and costs nothing, and it is the single biggest difference between a backsplash that looks designed and one that looks installed.
Substrate, thinset, and coverage
Painted drywall in a normal kitchen is an acceptable substrate for a backsplash โ this is not a wet area in the code sense. What it must be is clean, sound, and reasonably flat. Glossy paint gets scuffed, and any patched drywall should be primed.
Behind a sink where splashing is constant, or in a shower surround, the requirements change entirely โ cement board or a waterproofing membrane, not drywall.
Thinset choice and trowel size matter more than people expect. The goal is full coverage behind each tile, and a tile pulled off the wall mid-job should show mortar across its entire back. Glass and large-format tiles need specific mortars; using a general-purpose thinset under glass tile can telegraph trowel lines through the glass.
Grout, sealing, and the joint people forget
Grout width should suit the tile. Rectified tiles with crisp edges can take a very tight joint; handmade and irregular tiles need a wider one to absorb variation.
Cementitious grout needs sealing and will stain in a kitchen unless maintained. Epoxy grout costs more and is harder to work with, but it is stain-proof and never needs sealing โ behind a range or a sink that is often worth it.
The detail almost everyone gets wrong: the joint where the tile meets the countertop, and where it meets an inside corner, should be flexible caulk rather than grout. Those are movement joints. Grouting them produces a crack within a year as the counter and wall move independently. Color-matched caulk is available for every major grout color.
Signs you need this work
- A painted wall behind the counter that stains and will not clean up
- Dated tile from a previous decade you want updated
- Grout that is cracked, stained, or missing between existing tiles
- Loose or hollow-sounding tiles that have lost their bond
- Water damage on the wall behind the sink
- A kitchen refresh where new counters make the old backsplash look wrong
- Bare drywall left after removing an old backsplash
Cost by property type
| Property | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment / condo | $450 โ $2,160 | Smaller kitchen runs keep this near the low end. Check whether the association has rules about noise from wet saws. |
| Small home (under 1,500 sq ft) | $475 โ $2,275 | A typical 25 to 30 square foot backsplash โ the standard small-kitchen scope. |
| Midsize home (1,500โ2,500 sq ft) | $480 โ $2,300 | The baseline for this estimate โ roughly 30 to 40 square feet including a range wall. |
| Large home (2,500+ sq ft) | $535 โ $2,555 | Larger runs, an island, and full-height tile to the ceiling behind a range multiply the square footage and the cut count. |
| Older home (pre-1978) | $580 โ $2,800 | Walls in older homes are rarely flat, and tile shows every deviation. Expect wall prep โ skim coating or shimming โ as a line item. |
| Rental / turnover unit | $425 โ $2,045 | A simple subway tile backsplash is inexpensive and dramatically improves how a kitchen shows. Standard 3x6 white subway is the value choice. |
| Small commercial / office | $575 โ $2,760 | Break rooms and commercial kitchens may require FRP panels or specific sanitary assemblies instead of decorative tile. |
Ranges assume national-average handyman labor rates ($60โ$100/hr) and mid-grade materials.

Common questions
How much does a tile backsplash cost?
Typically $15 to $35 per square foot installed including materials, so a standard 30-square-foot kitchen backsplash runs roughly $600 to $1,000. Mosaic sheets, glass, and intricate patterns push the upper end higher.
Can tile go directly on painted drywall?
For a normal kitchen backsplash, yes โ provided the drywall is sound, clean, and the paint is not glossy. Wet areas like showers require cement board or a waterproof membrane instead.
How long does a backsplash take?
Usually two days: one to set the tile, then overnight for the thinset to cure before grouting the next day. Rushing the grout onto uncured thinset is a common cause of failures.
Should I use grout or caulk where the tile meets the countertop?
Caulk, always. That joint moves as the counter and wall shift seasonally, and grout will crack there. Use a flexible sealant color-matched to the grout.
