Terms of Service
The short version: HandyRanking is a directory. We list home repair businesses, we do not employ them, and we are not part of whatever you agree with one of them. Check a pro’s license and insurance yourself before money changes hands. If that is not acceptable to you, please do not use the site.
Who you are dealing with
HandyRanking.com is operated by HandyRanking. Where these terms say “we”, “us” or “HandyRanking”, that is who they mean. Using any part of the site counts as accepting what follows.
What this site is, and what it is not
HandyRanking publishes profiles for independent handymen and small home-repair firms — general repair, drywall, painting, carpentry, plumbing and lighting fixture work, doors, flooring, decks, exterior maintenance, and small remodels. Profiles come from two places: business information already published publicly, and details supplied by owners who have claimed their own listing.
We are not a contractor, an employer, an agent, or a broker for anyone listed here. We do not supervise their work, set their prices, or stand behind their results. A listing is not a recommendation and the order businesses appear in is not a ranking of competence.
If you are hiring someone
Anything you agree with a listed business is strictly between the two of you. We are not a party to it, we do not hold your money, and we cannot resolve a dispute about the work.
Two things are worth doing before you hire anyone, and they matter more in this trade than most. First, confirm the licence: what a handyman may legally do without a contractor license varies by state and by trade, and electrical, plumbing and structural work often sit outside it regardless of the price. Second, confirm insurance: ask for the certificate, not a verbal assurance. We publish neither on a business’s behalf and do not verify either.
The cost figures in our project guides are researched estimates for planning. They are not quotes, they are not offers, and no business listed here is bound by them.
If you are a listed business
Claiming your listing is free. Doing so, you are telling us you actually run the business or are authorized to speak for it, and that what you have written is true. We read claims — some automatically, some by hand — and we may decline one, edit it, or take it back down later if something does not hold up.
Whatever you upload — description, logo, photographs, trade list — you still own. Claiming or using your listing, and sending us material, also grants us the marketing license in the next section. Only upload material you are entitled to use.
A HandyRanking certification, if you earn one, is a credential we issue ourselves. It is not a license, it does not satisfy any regulatory requirement, and displaying it does not misrepresent you as licensed. Keeping your own licensing, insurance and permits in order remains entirely your responsibility.
Using your business name, images and content in our marketing
By using our services, our software or this site — including claiming or submitting a listing, or sending us photos, video, logos, reviews or other content — you grant HandyRanking a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable and sublicensable license to use, reproduce, publish, display, distribute, adapt, edit and make derivative works from the following, in any media now known or later developed, for any lawful purpose, including advertising, marketing, promotion, case studies, demonstrations and reproductions:
- your business name, trade names, logos and trademarks, and your public business and listing information, such as service area, hours, trades and listing details;
- photographs, video and audio you upload or send to us;
- reviews, ratings and testimonials you give us, together with the name you gave them under.
You confirm that you own, or have the right to grant this license for, anything you submit, and that no payment is owed to you for these uses. We do not need your approval of any particular advertisement.
This license does not cover, and we never sell or use in our advertising: (a) your customers’ personal information, phone numbers, or SMS/text-message consent, which our Privacy Policy governs; or (b) the face, voice or likeness of an identifiable person, which we use in advertising only with that person’s signed written release, as California Civil Code §3344 requires.
Things you must not do here
Do not submit information you know to be untrue. Do not claim a business that is not yours or pose as someone else. Do not harvest the directory by bot or script. Do not upload malware or abuse. Do not probe or interfere with how the site runs. Do not use HandyRanking for anything unlawful.
What belongs to whom
The HandyRanking name, mark, written content and site design belong to HandyRanking. Business names, logos and owner-submitted material belong to the businesses they came from, subject to the marketing license above.
Where our responsibility ends
THE SITE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. WE DO NOT PROMISE THE SITE WILL BE AVAILABLE, ACCURATE, OR FREE OF ERROR. WE MAKE NO WARRANTY WHATSOEVER ABOUT THE COMPETENCE, LICENSING, INSURANCE, HONESTY, SAFETY OR LEGALITY OF ANY BUSINESS LISTED. YOU ENGAGE THEM ENTIRELY AT YOUR OWN RISK.
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, HANDYRANKING AND ITS OFFICERS, EMPLOYEES AND AFFILIATES ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM USE OF THIS SITE OR FROM ANY DEALING WITH A BUSINESS FOUND THROUGH IT. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY ON ANY CLAIM CONNECTED WITH THE SITE IS CAPPED AT ONE HUNDRED US DOLLARS ($100).
If your use of the site, your breach of these terms, or your dealings with a listed business causes a claim against us, you agree to cover our costs in defending it.
Changes, law, and reaching us
These terms will change occasionally. When they change materially we move the date at the top of this page, and continuing to use the site after that means you accept the revision.
California law governs this agreement, disregarding its conflict-of-law rules. Disputes belong in the state or federal courts sitting in Riverside County, California.
