Figure out why the grout failed
Grout does not simply wear out on its own. Cracked or crumbling grout is usually telling you something.
Grout cracking in a straight line along one joint, especially at a corner or where the wall meets the floor, means movement โ that joint should have been flexible caulk, not grout. Grout falling out in one area while the rest is fine often means the tile beneath has lost its bond and is flexing. Widespread powdery grout can mean it was mixed too wet or with too much water when installed.
Regrouting over a debonded tile just puts fresh grout on a moving surface, and it cracks again within months. Tap the tiles first โ hollow-sounding tile needs to come up and be reset before anything else happens.
Removal is the labor, and the risk
Old grout has to come out to a consistent depth โ roughly two-thirds of the tile thickness โ so the new grout has enough material to bond and hold color.
The tools are an oscillating multi-tool with a carbide grout blade, a manual grout saw, or a rotary tool with a grout attachment. All of them are slow, and all of them will chip the glaze on the tile edge if they wander. Chipped edges cannot be repaired โ the tile has to be replaced.
This is why regrouting a small shower can take most of a day. When someone quotes a suspiciously low price for regrouting, they are usually planning to skim new grout over the old, which looks fine for about six weeks.
Grout choice and the caulk joints
Sanded grout goes in joints wider than about an eighth of an inch; unsanded goes in narrower ones and on polished stone that sand would scratch. Epoxy grout costs several times more and is harder to install, but it is waterproof, stain-proof, and never needs sealing โ a strong choice in a shower.
Cementitious grout should be sealed after it cures, and resealed periodically. That is the maintenance item most homeowners never do.
Then the change-of-plane rule: every inside corner, and every joint where tile meets a tub, a shower pan, a countertop, or a different material, should be flexible caulk. Those are movement joints. Grouting them is the most common reason a freshly regrouted shower cracks again in the same places.
Signs you need this work
- Grout that is cracked, crumbling, or missing between tiles
- Dark staining or mildew in the grout lines that will not clean off
- Tiles that sound hollow when tapped
- Water appearing on the ceiling below a second-floor bathroom
- Caulk at the tub or shower base that has split or pulled away
- Grout color that has faded or discolored unevenly
- A musty smell in the bathroom that persists after cleaning
Cost by property type
| Property | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment / condo | $135 โ $870 | Shower grout failure in a stacked building can leak into the unit below, which makes it worth addressing promptly and documenting. |
| Small home (under 1,500 sq ft) | $145 โ $915 | A single tub surround or small bathroom floor, low end of the range. |
| Midsize home (1,500โ2,500 sq ft) | $145 โ $920 | The baseline for this estimate โ one shower or bathroom floor regrouted. |
| Large home (2,500+ sq ft) | $160 โ $1,020 | Multiple bathrooms and large tiled areas scale the labor directly. Large-format tile has fewer joints per square foot and goes faster. |
| Older home (pre-1978) | $180 โ $1,130 | Original mud-set tile installations are extremely durable and worth preserving. Small hexagonal and penny-round tile has an enormous amount of joint per square foot and takes much longer. |
| Rental / turnover unit | $130 โ $820 | Regrouting and recaulking a shower is one of the cheapest ways to make a dated bathroom show acceptably. |
| Small commercial / office | $175 โ $1,105 | Restrooms and commercial wet areas often specify epoxy grout for cleanability and chemical resistance. |
Ranges assume national-average handyman labor rates ($60โ$100/hr) and mid-grade materials.

Common questions
How much does it cost to regrout a shower?
Typically $400 to $900 for a standard shower or tub surround, driven mostly by the labor to remove the old grout cleanly. Larger showers and small-format tile cost more.
Can new grout go over old grout?
No. A thin skim of new grout over old has nothing to bond to and will crack and release within weeks. The old grout must be cut out to depth.
How often should shower grout be sealed?
Cementitious grout should be sealed after installation and roughly annually after that. Epoxy grout never needs sealing, which is a large part of why it costs more.
Why does my grout keep cracking in the corners?
Because corners are movement joints and grout is rigid. Those joints should be flexible caulk. Removing the grout from the corners and caulking them properly fixes it for good.
