Why degreasing decides the whole outcome
Kitchen cabinets carry years of aerosolized cooking oil, especially the doors above and beside the range. Paint will not bond through grease, no matter how good the product is. This is the single most common reason cabinet paint jobs fail.
Proper prep means washing every surface with a degreaser, rinsing it, letting it dry, then scuff-sanding to break the existing sheen. Only then does primer go on. A quote that does not mention degreasing is a quote for a finish that will start chipping around the handles within a year.
Bonding primer and the right topcoat
Factory cabinet finishes are conversion varnish or catalyzed lacquer โ extremely hard, extremely smooth, and hostile to ordinary paint. A dedicated bonding primer is what lets a new finish grip that surface. Shellac-based and specialty bonding primers are the standard choices, and they also block tannin bleed from oak and knotty pine.
For the topcoat, a waterborne alkyd or a purpose-made cabinet enamel gives the hard, smooth, self-leveling finish people expect. Ordinary wall paint on cabinets stays soft, marks with fingernails, and sticks to itself where a door meets its frame.
Spray versus brush, and how long it takes
Spraying gives a glass-smooth factory-like finish and is what most professionals do โ doors come off, get labeled, and get sprayed flat in a controlled space while the boxes get sprayed or brushed in place with heavy masking.
Brush and roll with a quality enamel and a fine roller cover produces a very good result too and works better in an occupied home. It shows a slight texture up close that spraying does not.
Either way, plan on three to five days minimum. Each coat needs real cure time, and a rushed reassembly is how doors end up glued to their frames. Expect to live without cabinet doors for most of that week.
Signs you need this work
- Cabinet doors and boxes that are structurally solid but visually dated
- Finish worn through around handles, knobs, and the sink cabinet
- Oak grain and honey-colored stain you want to update without replacing
- Mismatched cabinets after a partial kitchen change
- Preparing a home for sale where a full kitchen remodel is not justified
- Sticky or gummy cabinet surfaces from years of cooking residue
Cost by property type
| Property | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment / condo | $1,045 โ $4,815 | Smaller kitchens with fewer doors keep this near the low end. Spraying may not be practical in an occupied building, which pushes toward brush-and-roll. |
| Small home (under 1,500 sq ft) | $1,100 โ $5,070 | A typical small-kitchen count of 15 to 20 doors and drawer fronts. |
| Midsize home (1,500โ2,500 sq ft) | $1,110 โ $5,100 | The baseline for this estimate โ roughly 25 to 35 doors and drawer fronts. |
| Large home (2,500+ sq ft) | $1,230 โ $5,640 | Large kitchens plus an island and a butler's pantry can double the door count and the price. Ask for pricing per door and drawer front so the quote is verifiable. |
| Older home (pre-1978) | $1,365 โ $6,285 | Original cabinets may carry oil-based or lead-containing paint, requiring lead-safe practices. Solid wood doors take paint beautifully; older thermofoil does not. |
| Rental / turnover unit | $990 โ $4,560 | A strong return on investment for a make-ready, though a spray finish needs the unit vacant for several days. |
| Small commercial / office | $1,330 โ $6,120 | Break-room and office casework is usually simpler and faster, but scheduling around occupancy adds cost. |
Ranges assume national-average handyman labor rates ($60โ$100/hr) and mid-grade materials.

Common questions
How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?
Typically $1,800 to $4,500 for an average kitchen, or roughly $75 to $150 per door and drawer front. Priced per door is the most reliable way to compare quotes.
How long do painted cabinets last?
A properly prepped and correctly coated cabinet finish lasts eight to fifteen years with normal use. A poorly prepped one starts chipping around the handles in under a year โ which is why prep is where the money goes.
Can laminate or thermofoil cabinets be painted?
Laminate can be painted with the right bonding primer and realistic expectations. Thermofoil is a vinyl film over MDF and often peels; if it is already lifting anywhere, painting will not stop it. Have a pro look before you commit.
Is painting cheaper than refacing or replacing?
Substantially. Painting typically costs a quarter to a third of refacing and a small fraction of full replacement. Replacement only makes sense when the boxes themselves are failing or the layout needs to change.
