Match the mount and you save an hour
Most residential disposals use one of two mounting systems: the three-bolt EZ-mount used by InSinkErator and several others, or the twist-lock system used by Waste King and Moen. If the new unit uses the same system as the old one, the existing sink flange assembly stays in place and the swap is quick.
Switching systems means removing the old flange from the sink, cleaning off the old plumber's putty, and installing the new flange โ which is not hard but adds real time. When shopping, note your existing brand and buy within the same mounting family unless you have a reason not to.
Horsepower, grind stages, and noise
One-third horsepower units are adequate for light use but jam easily and struggle with fibrous waste. Half horsepower is the practical minimum for a household that actually cooks. Three-quarter and one horsepower units handle more, jam less, and are noticeably quieter because they have more sound insulation and heavier grind chambers.
Stainless steel grind components resist corrosion far better than galvanized, which is the main reason cheap units die in five years while better ones run fifteen. If the kitchen sink is under a window or the kitchen opens to a living space, the noise difference between a budget and a mid-grade unit is worth the money.
The electrical and dishwasher details
Disposals connect either by a cord and plug into a switched outlet under the sink, or hardwired through a switch. Many new units ship without a cord, so the installer either reuses the old one or supplies a new kit. Either way the connection must be grounded.
If a dishwasher drains into the disposal, the knockout plug inside the disposal inlet must be removed before connecting โ forgetting this is the single most common installation error and results in a dishwasher that will not drain. The drain hose should also be routed with a high loop or through an air gap, depending on local code, to keep disposal contents from siphoning back into the dishwasher.
Signs you need this work
- Water dripping from the body of the disposal into the cabinet
- A humming sound with no grinding โ usually a jam, sometimes a failed motor
- No sound at all when switched on, after the reset button has been tried
- Persistent odor that returns immediately after cleaning
- Grinding that has become dramatically louder or rattly
- A dishwasher that no longer drains properly
- Visible rust or corrosion on the underside of the unit
Cost by property type
| Property | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment / condo | $140 โ $645 | Some buildings prohibit disposals entirely due to drain-line capacity. Confirm before purchasing a unit. |
| Small home (under 1,500 sq ft) | $145 โ $680 | Standard three-bolt mount swap, low end of the range. |
| Midsize home (1,500โ2,500 sq ft) | $150 โ $700 | The baseline for this estimate โ like-for-like replacement with existing wiring. |
| Large home (2,500+ sq ft) | $170 โ $790 | Larger sinks and higher-horsepower units are heavier and may need a dedicated circuit confirmed. |
| Older home (pre-1978) | $175 โ $815 | Older drain plumbing may sit at a height that conflicts with a taller modern unit, requiring the trap arm to be reworked. Wiring may need updating to a grounded circuit. |
| Rental / turnover unit | $130 โ $610 | Basic 1/3 or 1/2 horsepower units are the economical choice and adequate for normal use. |
| Small commercial / office | $180 โ $840 | Commercial food waste disposers are a different class of equipment with three-phase power and separate code requirements. |

Common questions
How much does garbage disposal installation cost?
Labor typically runs $150 to $300 for a like-for-like swap. Units run $90 to $400 depending on horsepower and sound insulation. Adding a new circuit or switch where none exists costs more and may require an electrician.
My disposal just hums โ do I need a new one?
Usually not. A hum means the motor has power but the plate is jammed. Turn off power, free it with the hex wrench in the bottom of the unit, clear the obstruction, and press the reset button. This fixes the majority of "dead" disposals.
How long does a garbage disposal last?
Eight to fifteen years for a quality unit with stainless components. Budget units with galvanized grind chambers often fail in five to seven, usually by corroding through and leaking.
Do I need an electrician to install a disposal?
Not if you are reusing an existing switched outlet or hardwired connection โ that is a standard handyman swap. Installing a new dedicated circuit, adding a switch, or upgrading ungrounded wiring is electrician work.
