Why a pro is faster than the box suggests
A large wardrobe or media unit can take a first-timer most of a day and a pro two hours. The difference is not strength โ it is sequence and tooling.
A pro lays out and identifies every part before starting, uses a drill with a clutch set low rather than driving cam screws by hand, knows which fasteners to leave finger-tight so the carcass can be squared before final tightening, and recognizes the standard traps โ the back panel that has to go in before the top, the drawer runners that are handed left and right, the shelf pin holes that are not symmetrical.
They also assemble in the room where the piece will live, because plenty of assembled furniture does not fit through a standard doorway.
Anti-tip anchoring is not optional
Flat-pack furniture is light, tall, and often has drawers that pull the center of gravity forward when opened. A child climbing an open drawer can bring the whole piece over.
Every reputable manufacturer includes an anti-tip strap or bracket in the box, and it is the part most commonly left in the bag. Installing it takes five minutes: the strap or bracket screws into a wall stud and into the back or top of the furniture.
It has to reach framing. A drywall anchor holding an anti-tip strap will pull out under exactly the load it exists to resist. If no stud lands behind the piece, a proper heavy-duty toggle or a small cleat is the answer.
Ask any handyman assembling furniture in your home to install the anti-tip hardware. A good one will do it without being asked.
What to expect on price
Assembly is usually quoted per item for common pieces or hourly for a mixed job. A simple nightstand or small bookcase is well under an hour. A large wardrobe, a bunk bed, a sectional, or an outdoor playset can each run several hours.
Batching matters enormously here because the minimum service call dominates a single small item. Having four or five pieces assembled in one visit costs far less per piece than scheduling them separately.
Also confirm who handles the packaging. A flat-pack bedroom set generates a remarkable volume of cardboard, and haul-away may be a separate charge.
Signs you need this work
- Flat-pack boxes stacked up after a move or a delivery
- A partially assembled piece that has stalled
- Furniture assembled incorrectly that now wobbles or will not close square
- Tall dressers or bookcases not anchored in a home with children
- A playset, bunk bed, or exercise equipment beyond a one-person job
- Items that need disassembly for a move and reassembly after
Cost by property type
| Property | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Apartment / condo | $55 โ $510 | Metal studs need appropriate anchors for wall-mounted and anti-tip hardware. Check elevator and delivery access before scheduling. |
| Small home (under 1,500 sq ft) | $60 โ $540 | Fewer and smaller items, low end of the range. |
| Midsize home (1,500โ2,500 sq ft) | $60 โ $540 | The baseline for this estimate โ several items assembled in a single visit. |
| Large home (2,500+ sq ft) | $65 โ $595 | Whole-house moves with many items are usually best quoted as a day rate rather than per item. |
| Older home (pre-1978) | $75 โ $670 | Plaster walls require fasteners that reach the lath and preferably the studs for anti-tip anchoring. |
| Rental / turnover unit | $55 โ $485 | Furnished rentals often need a full apartment assembled at once, which is a day rate job. |
| Small commercial / office | $70 โ $650 | Office furniture systems, cubicles, and modular desking are a distinct specialty with their own hardware and often a manufacturer certification. |
Ranges assume national-average handyman labor rates ($60โ$100/hr) and mid-grade materials.

Common questions
How much does furniture assembly cost?
Typically $75 to $150 per hour, or a flat rate per item โ often $50 to $100 for simple pieces and $150 to $350 for large wardrobes, bunk beds, and playsets. Batching several items in one visit is much cheaper per piece.
Should furniture be anchored to the wall?
Any tall or top-heavy piece, absolutely โ especially with children in the home. The anti-tip hardware in the box takes five minutes to install and must reach a wall stud, not just drywall.
Can a handyman disassemble furniture for a move?
Yes, and it is a common request. Be aware that particleboard cam-lock furniture loses strength each time it is taken apart and reassembled, and some pieces do not survive a second move.
Do I need to be home during assembly?
Not necessarily, but it helps to confirm placement and orientation at the start. Deciding a wardrobe faces the wrong way after it is assembled is an expensive change of mind.
